I suspect it's more wide spread than Yorkshire, unfortunately.

And while I'm on the subject of 'gay' which I had concern about posting after my recent edited removal of comments from a certain facebook thread it reminded me of the events of a couple of christmas's (sp?) ago.

This is probably more suited to the 'emabarrassment' thread, but sticking with the potentially offensive 'gay' theme...

Having managing to drink themselves into a stuper a couple of my friends were being given a lift home when they spotted a couple of others they'd been to the pub with walking down the same road.

They rolled down the window and processed to yell at the top of their lungs 'gay!' aimed solely at one of the guys walking. However in their drunken state they'd completely forgetten that the other guy was actually gay. This was then compounded by the fact they managed to pass them again and still hadn't made this cringe worthly realisation and proceeded to give it a second go.

Not that I condone that behaviour. Apparently the two walking just carried on walking like nothing had happened.

It's terrible that you feel forced to drink to avoid ridicule, I suppose that's Yorkshire for you! The only social pressure I feel is the one to collectively reduce our intelligence together.

I don't really recieve any notable pleasure from alcohol and could quite easily go through life without any need for it. The few times I do drink are more through habit/social requirement than anything else.

That's not to say the pressure is too great or I have no choice - I don't dislike alcohol either. But a man can't be seen to go to a local pub, order half a lemon and lime for his first drink and expect not to be thoroughly rediculed. As some of my friend like to announce, 'pint of cock, or half a gay' when asking what I want from the bar.

Kafka - 40? [Internauting] You're right. I'd been living under the misinformation of his dying of pneumonia at 19. He's a lot more compelling when you believe that.

Kafka lived to 40 didn't he? I think his dad was a bit vulgar and he reacted against that.

The universal public persona and 'casual intimacy' as Tim O'Reilly calls it, is something that's provoked a lot of talk within these here walls of late. My grandmother joined Facebook and me & my youngest brother are the only 2 of her 11 grandchildren to accept her friend requests.

I like to think similarly to you in terms of 'for whosoever cares to listen', in that my Twitter & Facebook among all the other crap (I micro-blog exclusively, darling) aren't directed at specific demographics (they just happen to receive them).

With other relatives sporting status updates like 'has piked up some coke', it ends up saying more about who you happen to be and how happy you are about it than attitudes of pure choice.

Did Franz Kafka ever get to legal drinking age?

Ah, sorry Alex, I was wrong about Ecce Homo. He does come out as teetotal:

"Later, towards the middle of life, I decided, to be sure, more and more strictly against any sort of 'spiritous' drink: an opponent of vegetarianism from experience, just like Richard wagner who converted me, I cannot advise all more spiritual natures too seriously to abstain from alcohol absolutely. Water suffices ... "

Perhaps they're counting Nietzsche as teetotal from his last decade - when he was presumably not imbibing what with being in a coma.
Or, as with the attempt to make him into a German nationalist, maybe it was one of his sister's corruptions of his work and image in the texts she edited and propagated.

The idea of sober conversation strikes fear into the heart of every Scotsman.
With your help, maybe we can find a cure.

@Tom Maybe we could have a dry dinner party to celebrate our respective sobriety and ward off the blues.

@Alex I think Wikipedia might be wrong about Nietzsche who speaks at length about how Italian wine is superior to German beer in Ecce Homo.
